Ki Sung-Yueng returned to haunt former club Sunderland as his second-half header rescued a 1-1 Premier League draw for Swansea City on Saturday.

The South Korea international, back in the starting XI after reaching the Asian Cup final with his country, spent the majority of last season on loan at Sunderland.

And the midfielder, who also had a goal ruled out in the first half, made a decisive contribution when he stooped low to meet Kyle Naughton's cross in the second half at the Liberty Stadium - denying Sunderland what would have been back-to-back league wins for the first time this season.

Swansea were somewhat unfortunate to go into the break 1-0 down after wasting several chances, with Jermain Defoe - who opened his Sunderland account in last weekend's 2-0 win over Burnley - showing his finishing skills with a low drive shortly before half-time.

The hosts' pressure finally told with Ki's header and a draw was no more than Garry Monk's men deserved for their efforts.

A point leaves Swansea in ninth, while Guy Poyet's Sunderland remain 14th.

Swansea, who handed Jack Cork a debut in one of three changes from the 1-0 win at Southampton, engineered the first shot on goal in the ninth minute when Bafetimbi Gomis fizzed a low strike wide of the right-hand post.

Sunderland, who named two changes to the side that beat Burnley including a first league start for Danny Graham since the last game of the 2012-13 season, gradually grew into the game and former Swansea midfielder Jordi Gomez flashed an effort wide.

Their threat proved brief as Swansea reasserted themselves and Gomis was denied by a smart save from Costel Pantilimon, who was out quick to save the striker's low shot after he latched on to Jonjo Shelvey's throughball.

The French striker went close again on the half-hour mark when he stretched to meet a teasing cross from Modou Barrow - making his first Premier League start - with his right foot, but he failed to make clean contact.

It appeared as though the pressure had paid off when Ki side-footed home Shelvey's free-kick, only to see his goal ruled out for offside.

Sunderland made the most of the reprieve in the 41st minute as Swansea's defenders backed off Defoe allowing the England international to fire a clinical strike low into the bottom left-hand corner from 18 yards.

Shortly after the restart Sunderland's Ricky Alvarez - rewarded with a start after scoring in Tuesday's 3-1 FA Cup win over Fulham - thought he should have had a penalty when he was tripped by Ashley Williams in the penalty area.

The hosts continued to enjoy the majority of possession and their reward finally came in the 66th minute when January signing Naughton's cross was met with a diving header from Ki that beat Pantilimon.

Buoyed by the goal Swansea continued to probe and Shelvey bent a free-kick wide from 30 yards.

Sunderland were forced to survive a few anxious moments in the closing stages, but - despite substitute Nelson Oliveira testing Pantilimon's reflexes late on - Swansea were left frustrated in their pursuit of a winner.

Chelsea extended their lead at the top of the table to seven points after seeing off an Aston Villa team who finally ended their Premier League goal drought after 11 hours.

With nearest rivals Manchester City held at home by Hull, Branislav Ivanovic's winner secured a vital victory for the leaders.

Villa, who had not scored in the league since 20 December, responded well after falling behind to Eden Hazard's early goal and levelled through Jores Okore's header at the start of the second half.

But Ivanovic restored the Blues' advantage after 66 minutes and they went on to secure Jose Mourinho's first win at Villa Park at the sixth attempt.

The spirit Villa showed in defeat will be scant consolation for Paul Lambert's struggling side, whose winless run now stands at nine league games, but it appeared they were heading for a far worse defeat when Hazard opened the scoring after eight minutes.

That goal was scored far too easily from Villa's point of view, with their defence being carved apart as Oscar escaped down the right and fed Willian, who found Hazard running into the area to slot home.

Villa's main tactic in Lambert's 100th league game in charge seemed to be to fire a succession of crosses into the box, despite that fact their out-of-form target man Christian Benteke was dropped to the bench and Gabriel Agbonlahor did not offer much of an aerial threat in his place.

Harry Kane continued his superb recent form with two goals as Tottenham came from behind to beat Arsenal in an entertaining north London derby.

Kane pounced to finish at the back post following Mousa Dembele's flick from a corner early in the second half.

He then rose to head home in the 86th minute to take Spurs above the Gunners in the Premier League table.

Mesut Ozil had given Arsenal the lead with a close-range finish but they sat back after and paid the price.

Spurs have now won their last seven home matches and taken 22 points from a possible 27.

They also have a very real chance of ending a run of 18 seasons in which they have finished below Arsenal in the Premier League table.
And they have a superstar in the shape of Kane, who now has 22 goals for the season, four in his last two games, and must surely have done enough in front of watching Roy Hodgson to warrant a call-up to his England squad.

Twice in the second half he breached an Arsenal backline that had previously looked as stubborn and solid as it had during last month's impressive 2-0 win at champions Manchester City.

His first goal was an opportunist strike, arriving at the back post to finish after Dembele's flick-on from a corner.

His second was a headed finish of the highest quality as he rose above the Gunners defence and guided his effort past the flailing David Ospina.

He could have been on the scoresheet sooner but his long-range shot was well saved by Ospina during a first half in which Spurs were the more positive side, but ended it behind when Olivier Giroud's fluffed finish from Danny Welbeck's cross fell to Ozil to finish from inside the box.

At the break, Arsenal were eyeing another efficient counter-attacking victory in the mould of their Etihad triumph - a win that would have been their 13th in 16 games.

Wenger's side had chances in the second half - most notably a long-range Welbeck shot that was well saved by Hugo Lloris - but in general they were not at their best as they became the latest side to suffer at the hands of Spurs and their in-form striker.

A late Iago Aspas goal was merely a consolation for Unai Emery's men as Carlo Ancelotti's side restored their four point lead at the top

La Liga pacesetters Real Madrid extended their lead over Barcelona to four points by beating wasteful Sevilla 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Carlo Ancelotti once again had to do without the suspended Cristiano Ronaldo, but his men were in clinical form against Unai Emery's side, with first-half goals from James Rodriguez and Jese Rodriguez enough to win a frantic encounter.

Despite falling behind to James' 12th-minute header, Sevilla arguably enjoyed the better of the first half-hour, as Vitolo, Vicente Iborra and Grzegorz Krychowiak all went close to finding the net.

Real showed no mercy, though, doubling their lead through Jese just one minute after Beto's exit, giving Sevilla - who lost 7-3 on their last visit to the Bernabeu - a mountain to climb.

Iago Aspas pulled one back with 10 minutes to go, after Jese had been denied a second goal by the woodwork, but Real held on to open up a healthy advantage in the Liga title race.

Sevilla began the contest brightly and should have taken the lead inside three minutes, as Vitolo capitalised on a defensive miscommunication, only to see his effort smothered by the advancing Iker Casillas.

The visitors then received a boost to their chances in the ninth minute, as former Sevilla defender Ramos was forced off after seemingly injuring his hamstring.

That substitution showed no signs of causing an immediate hindrance to Real, though, and James put them into the lead three minutes later, meeting Marcelo's pinpoint delivery with a diving header.

Sevilla did not look perturbed by falling behind and almost hit back four minutes later, as Iborra charged into the area and hit the post, before Krychowiak headed into the side-netting soon after.

Stoppages began to upset the away side's momentum, however, with goal-scorer James forced off, before Sevilla goalkeeper Beto required a stretcher after being caught on the head by Benzema's knee in the 35th minute.

Within 60 seconds of Beto's withdrawal, substitute keeper Sergio Rico was picking the ball out of his net, as James' replacement, Jese, smashed in from close range.

Sevilla continued to see their fair share of possession early in the second half, but Real looked rampant going forward and a crucial Krychowiak block prevented Gareth Bale from scoring a fine solo effort, before Jese fired against the post from an acute angle.

Isco also got in on the act, driving through the middle of the Sevilla team in the 55th minute, only to see Rico produce a good save.

The visitors remained a threat on the break and should have clawed one back with half an hour to go, but Iborra inexplicably missed the target from six yards.

Emery furiously urged his men forward in search of a last-gasp comeback and substitute Aspas steered past Casillas following Vitolo's delightful run and cut-back, but they failed to find a second and Real secured a slender win to go four points clear at the summit, while Sevilla stay fourth.
